What defines gender

What defines gender is still a big question asked by sociologists. (According to the W.H.O) Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviours and roles associated with being a woman, man, girl or boy, as well as relationships with each other. As a social construct, gender varies from society to society and can change over time.

Gender interacts with but is different from sex, which refers to the different biological and physiological characteristics of females, males and intersex persons, such as chromosomes, hormones and reproductive organs. Gender and sex are related to but different from gender identity. Gender identity refers to a person’s deeply felt, internal and individual experience of gender, which may or may not correspond to the person’s physiology or designated sex at birth.

Gender Roles

Brittanica defines the concept of gender role as the "culturally and socially determined set of expected behaviors, attitudes, and characteristics based on concepts of masculinity and femininity. A gender role should not be confused with gender identity, which refers to an individual’s internal sense of being masculine, feminine, on a spectrum between the two, a gender unrelated to that binary, or no gender at all."

Gender roles affect individual's domestic behaviours like taking care of childreen, cooking and cleaning, personalities

Gender roles are harmful to society as they limit the abilities that genders have by determining borders.

How does Gender Inequality Occur?

In most of the today's sociaties the root reason for gender inequality is the ideology and the practise of Patriarchy. Patriarchy is defined as an ideology that upholds men's systemic dominance over women, justifying male superiority and rejecting equal structures in both public and private spheres of life. It involves the belief that men should hold power in the family and society, leading to the acceptance of violence against women as a means of maintaining male control. (Science Direct)
